Frequently Asked Questions

Features

Where is feature X (lower-left cover art, recommendations, Internet Radio plugin, DAAP, in-folder cover art support, ability to set cover art) in Banshee 1.0?
These features didn't make it into Banshee 1.0, but most of them are in Banshee 1.2. The lower-left cover art and the ability to set cover art are still being worked on.
Where does Banshee get its cover art?
Banshee looks first in the audio file itself for embedded artwork, then in the folder the file is in, then from Rhapsody, then Amazon, then finally Last.fm.
How do I get my compilation albums to group/sort nicely?
See the user guide.
Where can I find (and how do I install) third-party extensions?
See the Extensions section.
Does Banshee support audio/video format X (mp3, aac, mpeg, etc)?
Banshee uses GStreamer for audio and video decoding (playing) and encoding (ripping, format conversions). Whatever codecs you have installed for GStreamer, Banshee will be able to use (with a small number of exceptions).
Does Banshee run on Windows or OS X?
Starting with Banshee 1.4, packages are available for OS X. See the download page for details. There has been substantial work done to make Banshee run on Windows but there has not been a release of this work yet. We expect to release official packages for Windows soon.

Hardware

Does Banshee support iPhones or iPod Touch devices?
No. These devices are very different from iPods and support for them has not been undertaken yet.
Does Banshee support NJB devices (old Dell DJ, etc.)

No. We dropped support for NJB devices since the protocol is obsolete and there weren't many NJB players ever on the market. Most NJB devices can be upgraded to MTP/PlaysForSure firmware, which Banshee does support.

Technical / Infrastructure

Where does Banshee store configuration files/the library database?
It is stored under ~/.config/banshee-1/. The library database itself is called banshee.db and is a SQLite 3 database.
